A group of ninety pupils from Barrow Hall Primary School recently had the exciting opportunity to explore the inner workings of an Amazon fulfilment centre in Warrington. The 400,000 sq ft facility opened its doors to the curious young minds, giving them a firsthand look at what happens once a customer clicks ‘buy’ on an item.

During the behind-the-scenes tour, the students were able to witness how Amazon stores, picks, and packs products, as well as how customer orders are processed and shipped from the site. Christian Stewart, the general manager of Amazon in Warrington, expressed his delight in welcoming the pupils and sharing insights into the operations that take place behind the scenes.

One of the students, Hasan, shared his excitement about the visit, mentioning how impressed he was with the machinery used to package items and expressing a particular fondness for the robots in the facility. The experience left a lasting impression on the young visitors, sparking their curiosity and introducing them to the world of e-commerce and logistics.

The teachers from Barrow Hall Primary School also expressed their gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of such experiences in expanding the students’ learning horizons beyond the classroom. Mr. Shaw, a teacher at the school, extended thanks to Christian and the Amazon team for accommodating the enthusiastic group of children and providing them with valuable insights into the company’s operations.

Apart from engaging with schools and students through tours and educational initiatives, Amazon is actively involved in supporting communities where it operates. The company’s community engagement efforts include donations, volunteering, and initiatives like the Multibank network, co-founded with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Multibank initiative aims to assist families in need by donating surplus goods, with over three million items distributed to families across various regions in the UK. Additionally, Amazon has played a significant role in promoting STEM education among students, reaching over 700,000 young learners through free programmes like Amazon Future Engineer.

Overall, the behind-the-scenes tour of the Amazon fulfilment centre provided the pupils from Barrow Hall Primary School with a unique and educational experience, offering them a glimpse into the world of online retail and logistics. Through such community engagement initiatives, Amazon continues to make a positive impact on both young learners and families in need across the UK.
