Residents in Cheshire are being asked to give their opinions on a proposed 100km underground hydrogen pipeline project. The pipeline, known as HyNet North West, aims to distribute low carbon hydrogen from the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex to industrial sites in the North West, including areas like Northwich, Chester, Halton, and Warrington.
The project, led by Cadent Gas, will involve the construction of a pipeline underground, along with nine Hydrogen Above Ground Installations (HAGIs) and two Block Valve Installations (BVIs) along the route. Cadent is seeking a Development Consent Order (DCO) from the Government to proceed with the pipeline, and as part of this process, they are conducting a consultation to gather feedback from the community.
Rob Donovan, the project director, emphasized the importance of community input in shaping the project. He mentioned that feedback from previous consultations has already led to changes in the design, and they are keen to hear more views to further refine the plans. The goal of HyNet North West is to create the UK’s first 100% hydrogen network, which will play a crucial role in decarbonizing the region and moving towards a net-zero future.
Once the final design is ready, Cadent plans to submit an application for a DCO in Spring 2025, with a decision expected in 2026. Mr. Donovan highlighted the project’s significance in reducing carbon emissions, creating green jobs, and boosting the region’s industry.
The consultation period will last until November 19 and will include both in-person and online events for the public to learn more about the project and share their feedback. To get involved, residents can visit Cadent’s online consultation hub for more information.
Overall, the HyNet North West project holds great promise for advancing the use of low carbon hydrogen in the North West, and community engagement is vital in ensuring its success. Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation and have their voices heard in shaping this innovative and sustainable initiative.
