Residents in Warrington are being invited to share their thoughts on the new plans for Kingsway Bridge, as the Warrington Borough Council launches a four-week consultation on the Kingsway Bridge Improvement Scheme. This project, funded by the government’s Town Deal programme, is part of a larger sustainable travel plan aimed at promoting more walking and cycling in and around the town center.

One of the main highlights of the scheme is the introduction of new cycle lanes on Kingsway Bridge, where currently there is no formal cycle provision. The lack of designated cycling paths has led to conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians, with some cyclists resorting to riding on the pavement.

The proposed improvements include a two-way segregated cycle route on the east side of the bridge, cycle crossings at strategic points, an extended path connecting Farrell Street to Bridgewater Avenue, and shared-use facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, three new crossings are planned to enhance connectivity in the area.

The implementation of high-quality cycle routes, separated from the main road and footpath, aims to encourage more people to cycle, leading to health and environmental benefits while addressing issues of congestion. The council emphasizes the potential benefits for young people attending the nearby high school.

Importantly, the proposed changes will not reduce traffic capacity, as the number of lanes will remain the same. Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation by completing an online survey or attending one of the consultation events at the Westy Community Centre on specific dates.

Cllr Hans Mundry, Warrington Borough Council leader and cabinet member for transport, emphasized the council’s commitment to sustainable travel through the Kingsway Bridge Improvement Scheme. The goal is to create a safer and more accessible environment for pedestrians and cyclists, making it easier and safer for everyone to move around the area.

The consultation period will run until December 2nd, providing ample time for residents to review the proposals and share their feedback.
