This week, Liverpool celebrated the 115th anniversary of the opening of the first Woolworths store in the UK. Back in 1909, the iconic Woolworths store opened its doors on Church Street in Liverpool, marking the beginning of a beloved high street brand’s presence in the city. Founded by Frank Winfield Woolworth, the F.W Woolworth Company from the US sent a team to the UK to start its overseas expansion.
Over the years, Woolworths became a well-known and cherished brand in the UK, with many fondly recalling its ‘pic n mix’ selection and popular stationery section. Affectionately known as “Woolies,” the store held a special place in the hearts of many customers.
However, the beloved Woolworths stores faced a sad fate in 2009 when the company went into administration in the UK, marking the end of an era for the iconic brand. Despite this, the memories of Woolworths live on in the hearts of those who frequented its stores.
In commemoration of Woolworths’ legacy in Liverpool, we have delved into our archives to unearth fascinating photos of Woolworths locations in the city from years past. Thanks to Mirrorpix, we are able to revisit the first store on Church Street, as well as other branches on London Road, Southport, and Kirkby in Merseyside.
