Challenging Themselves for a Cause
Two young friends, Will Good and Sam Jolly, have embarked on an incredible journey to run the length of the UK in record time. The duo, both 22 years old, set off from John O’Groats on a mission to become the fastest pair to ever cover the 870-mile route to Land’s End in Cornwall. Not only are they testing their physical limits, but they are also raising funds for the mental health charity Mind. Their goal is to raise £10,000, and they have already amassed an impressive £6,084 through their Just Giving page.
Will and Sam have a personal connection to their cause, as they strongly believe in the mental health benefits of running. Will, a recent graduate from Nottingham University, expressed their shared belief that pushing oneself physically can have a positive impact on mental well-being. This belief is what drives them to undertake such a daunting challenge. The friends, who first met at school in Surrey, have always shared a passion for pushing boundaries and supporting each other through challenging endeavors.
Planning and Preparation
The route they are tackling, known as JOGLE, is a well-known endurance challenge that attracts fitness enthusiasts from around the world. While cycling the route is a popular option, running it is reserved for the most dedicated athletes. The current record for men stands at 19 days and 3 hours, with the women’s record held by Sharon Gaytor at 12 days and 11 hours. However, there is no existing record for a pair completing the challenge, making Will and Sam’s attempt all the more remarkable.
To ensure they stay on track and receive the necessary support, the duo has enlisted the help of celebrity running coach Chris Taylor. Known for his work with high-profile clients like Spencer Matthews, Taylor has provided valuable guidance on planning the most efficient route, fueling strategies, and training techniques. With a support van driven by friends accompanying them along the route, Will and Sam have the necessary resources to navigate the physical and mental challenges that lie ahead.
Endurance and Impact
This is not the first time Will and Sam have taken on a monumental physical challenge for a charitable cause. Last summer, they ran the 470-kilometer coastline of Cornwall in just eight days, raising over £5,300 for Oddballs, a charity focused on raising awareness for testicular cancer through sports. Their dedication to using their athletic pursuits as a platform for raising awareness and funds for important causes is truly commendable.
As they make their way through Warrington and towards their ultimate goal of Land’s End, Will and Sam’s journey serves as a testament to the power of friendship, determination, and the positive impact of physical activity on mental health. By pushing their limits and inspiring others to support their cause, these two young men are making a difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health issues. Their record-breaking fundraiser is not just about setting a new athletic achievement but also about fostering awareness and support for an important cause.
