We’ve Got a Problem, Folks
Look, I’ve been in this game for over 20 years. I’ve seen alot of changes, not all of them good. But lately, I’m starting to think the news is completley broken. And I’m not alone. Over coffee at the place on 5th last Tuesday, my colleague named Dave told me, “Marcus, we’re failing. And we’re failing bad.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.
I mean, let’s be real here. The news is a mess. It’s fragmented, it’s biased, it’s sensationalist. It’s like we’re all just shouting into the void, hoping someone out there gives a damn. And honestly, I’m not sure they do anymore.
But here’s the thing: I don’t have all the answers. I’m just one guy, sitting in my office in Liverpool, trying to make sense of it all. And frankly, some days, I just wanna throw my hands up and say, “Sod it, I’m gonna go get a pint.”
Remember When News Was Actual News?
Back in the day, news was… well, it was news. You had your serious papers, your broadsheets, your local rags. And yeah, they had their biases, but at least they tried to hide it. At least they tried to be objective. Now? Forget about it. It’s all opinion, all the time. And not even good opinions. Just hot takes and outrage.
I remember when I started out, back in ’98. We had these things called “fact checkers.” You know, people who actually checked facts? Crazy, right? Now, it’s all about speed. Get it out there first, worry about the truth later. And it’s killing us. Literally, it’s killing us. Because people believe this stuff. They believe it, and they act on it, and then bad things happen.
And don’t even get me started on social media. It’s like we’ve handed over the keys to the kingdom to a bunch of algorithms that thrive on outrage. It’s a disaster. A complete and utter disaster.
But Wait, There’s Hope?
Now, I’m not saying it’s all doom and gloom. There are people out there trying to do it right. Trying to report the news, not just make it up as they go along. But they’re fighting an uphill battle. Because the system is broken. The system is rigged against them.
Take my friend Sarah, for example. She’s a reporter over at the Liverpool Echo. Great kid, really talented. But she’s constantly under pressure to churn out clickbait. “Marcus,” she told me, “I want to write about important stuff. But if I do, the clicks aren’t there. And if the clicks aren’t there, my editor’s gonna be on my case.” It’s a tough spot to be in.
And look, I get it. Advertisers want clicks. Editors want clicks. Even readers want clicks. But at what cost? At what point do we say, “Enough is enough”? At what point do we start valuing quality over quantity?
I think—no, I know—we need to start supporting the outlets that are doing it right. The ones that are committing to real journalism. And that means being willing to pay for it. Because news isn’t free. It never has been, and it never will be. Someone has to pay for it. And if we’re not willing to do that, then we don’t get to complain when it goes away.
And Speaking of Gadgets…
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Marcus, you’re talking about news, not tech.” But hear me out. In this digital age, tech is news. And news is tech. They’re inseparable. So, if you’re gonna stay informed, you need the right tools. And that doesn’t mean breaking the bank. Check out tech gadgets under budget review for some solid, affordable options. Because staying informed shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.
A Quick Digression: My Pet Peeve
You know what really gets my goat? When people say, “Oh, I don’t need to keep up with the news. It’s all bad anyway.” No, it’s not. It’s not all bad. There are good things happening out there. There are people doing amazing things. But if you’re not paying attention, you’re never gonna know about them. And that’s a shame. A real shame.
So, do yourself a favor. Pick up a paper. Read an article. Watch the news. Just… just be informed. Please. For the love of all that’s holy, be informed.
And look, I’m not saying you have to agree with everything you read. Of course not. But at least be informed enough to form your own opinion. Because that’s what this is all about, right? Forming our own opinions. Making our own decisions. Being our own people.
So, What Now?
I’m not sure, honestly. I wish I had some grand solution to offer. Some magic fix that’s gonna make everything better. But I don’t. All I can do is keep writing. Keep trying to do it right. Keep hoping that maybe, just maybe, someone out there is listening.
And hey, maybe that someone is you. Maybe you’re the one who’s gonna change all this. Maybe you’re the one who’s gonna make a difference. I don’t know. But I do know this: we need you. We need people who care. Who give a damn. Who are willing to fight for the truth.
So, what do you say? You in? Let’s do this thing.
