Hidden History Revealed: Unearthing the Secrets Beneath Liverpool Olympia

As throngs of visitors flock to the iconic Liverpool Olympia each month, few are aware of the rich history that lies beneath their feet. Recently, the ECHO had the unique opportunity to explore this historic site on West Derby Road, delving into its past and uncovering the hidden gems that make it truly remarkable.

A Glimpse into the Past

Dating back to 1905, the Grade II* Listed Liverpool Olympia was the brainchild of celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham. Over the years, this architectural masterpiece has worn many hats, transforming from a theater and circus venue to a cinema, dance hall, and bingo hall. Today, Chris Zorba, the proud owner of Liverpool Olympia, continues to uphold its legacy, following in the footsteps of his late father, Panayiotis Zorba, who acquired the venue from Mecca Leisure over three decades ago.

Preserving History, Embracing the Present

For the Zorba family, revitalizing the historic Liverpool Olympia has been a labor of love. Despite the venue’s evolution to host modern events like live music gigs, boxing matches, and MMA fights, its original charm and features have been carefully preserved. One such feature is the ‘elephant pit,’ a relic from its circus days that still captivates visitors with its intriguing history.

A Journey Back in Time

During a rare, guided tour of Liverpool Olympia, venue manager Andy Hudston shed light on the venue’s storied past. With photographer Colin Lane and video reporter Alice Walker in tow, the team captured stunning visuals of the elephant pit, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Andy shared anecdotes of the venue’s rumored tunnels—one leading outside the city limits and another to a nearby pub—adding a touch of mystery to this already enchanting narrative.

Celebrating a Milestone

As Liverpool Olympia gears up to celebrate its 120th anniversary, the venue is poised to honor its cultural significance with a grand birthday show. Chris Zorba expressed his pride in carrying on the venue’s legacy, promising a year filled with exceptional music, comedy, and sporting events that pay homage to its illustrious history. From the former elephant pit to a long-forgotten balcony closed off since the 1950s, every corner of Liverpool Olympia tells a story waiting to be discovered.
