Mamars, the artisan bakery and delicatessen, has seen a significant increase in business since moving to The Hive on Sankey Street in Warrington town centre. The owner, Sonia Johnson, started the independent business four years ago and has since expanded to offer a wide selection of artisan cheeses, meats, and baked goods made from scratch with high-quality ingredients.
Sonia, who is also the head baker, shared that the move to The Hive has allowed them to triple the amount of sourdough bread baked daily. The sourdough, made with just three ingredients – flour, salt, and water, has gained popularity among customers. In addition to bread, Mamars offers a range of cheeses, cured meats, deli products, and other retail items sourced from small independent artisan businesses.
The bakery also features an eating area where customers can enjoy toasties, cheese, and charcuterie boards, as well as a variety of other menu items made fresh in front of them. The business has a strong community focus, offering classes, hosting support groups, and participating in initiatives to combat loneliness.
When asked about the decision to open her own business, Sonia mentioned that she needed a change during the Covid-19 pandemic and wanted to pursue her passion for baking and working with people. Despite the challenges of starting a business during a pandemic, Mamars has flourished and gained a loyal customer base.
Looking ahead, Sonia plans to expand the evening offerings at the bakery, introducing interesting artisan food menus and possibly adding more community activities. With a focus on quality, comfort, and a unique dining experience, Mamars continues to stand out in the local market and attract customers looking for a taste of Europe in the heart of Warrington.
