Debbie Makin, the original founder of Fika, recently decided to pass the business on to someone else as she embarked on a new venture. Stepping up to the challenge is Louise Carr, the long-time manager of the shop, who officially took over ownership last week. Louise, who has been with Fika since its inception, expressed her commitment to maintaining the shop’s current offerings and atmosphere.
The name “Fika” itself is a nod to the Scandinavian tradition of taking a coffee break with friends, and the shop’s interior reflects this welcoming concept. In addition to serving delicious treats, Fika also features a home goods section curated by Debbie, offering items like table sets, cushions, lamps, and house plants that complement the shop’s aesthetic.
While Fika briefly experimented with a deli section last year, the focus has since shifted back to providing ample seating for customers to relax and enjoy their coffee. Louise emphasized that she values the sense of community that Fika has fostered over the years and is dedicated to preserving the positive relationships with both customers and staff members.
Since taking on the role of owner, Louise has received an outpouring of support from the Fika community, including her team, regular patrons, and neighboring businesses. She expressed gratitude for the warm reception and noted that while she has no immediate plans for major changes, she is open to exploring potential expansions in the future.
Fika Coffee and Home operates six days a week, opening at 9am on weekdays and 10am on Sundays.
