The demolition of The Sportsman’s Arms pub in Penketh, a historic landmark on a main route in Warrington, is nearly complete. The pub closed its doors in 2017, despite efforts by residents to keep it open. The building, which dates back to 1846, has been empty since then and has fallen into disrepair.
Various planning applications were submitted in the past to redevelop the site, including proposals for a supermarket and housing, but none came to fruition. However, last year, plans by developers Churchill Retirement Living were approved. These plans include the demolition of The Sportsman’s Arms to make way for 56 apartments, a lodge manager’s office, a reception area, communal facilities, guest suites, parking areas, and landscaping efforts.
The development is expected to bring in £435,000 a year to the local economy and create around seven new jobs. While there were objections to the initial plans, planning inspectors dismissed them citing the significant benefits the scheme will bring to the town.
Adam Mooij, managing director of Churchill’s northern region, expressed excitement about the new development in Penketh. He highlighted that retirement housing is an effective form of residential development for boosting local economic growth, supporting jobs, and increasing spending in the area. Additionally, the new apartments will contribute to the health and wellbeing of the residents and address the housing needs of older individuals in Penketh and the surrounding area.
The demolition of The Sportsman’s Arms marks the end of an era for the historic pub, but it also paves the way for a new chapter in the area’s development. The transformation of the site into modern apartments not only brings economic benefits but also addresses the housing needs of the community. It is a reminder of the evolving landscape of Warrington and the importance of adapting to meet the changing needs of the population. As construction progresses on the new development, residents can look forward to a revitalized space that will contribute to the local economy and enhance the quality of life for those who call it home.
