I recently visited Jersey to work with the children’s charity, Variety, and it was an amazing experience. The sunny weather and the memories of my previous visits to Jersey and Guernsey made me feel nostalgic. My first visit to Jersey was with my mom when I was a teenager, and we stayed at The Merton, also known as the Honeymoon Hotel. I even participated in a fancy dress competition and won, which made me wonder if my mom had a clue about my sexuality back then.
My second visit to the islands was for a TV show hosted by Michael Barrymore in 1988, where I shared the stage with legends like Danny La Rue and Joe Longthorne. It was an unforgettable experience, and I miss those great artists dearly. Both Jersey and Guernsey, despite being part of the Channel Islands, have different governance and cultures. Jersey is larger with its own legal system and currency, while Guernsey is smaller but self-governing and includes Alderney, Sark, and Herm.
I have a soft spot for Guernsey, where I did a summer season in 1975 at the Wayside Cheer. I worked with an amazing cast, including Holly Day, who has become a dear friend. Despite the fun times we had during the season, I encountered a major problem when I bought a new car in Guernsey and had it confiscated at the port on my way back home. After a long legal battle and paying a fine, I finally got my car back, which had only been driven for 11 miles.
Despite the car mishap, my memories of the Channel Islands are filled with happiness and nostalgia. The stunning sandy beaches of Jersey and the rugged cliffs of Guernsey offer unique experiences for visitors. Jersey’s vibrant culture and Guernsey’s charming harbors provide a diverse range of activities for tourists to enjoy. The friendly locals, delicious cuisine, and picturesque landscapes make the Channel Islands a perfect destination for a memorable vacation. Whether you prefer the bustling atmosphere of Jersey or the peaceful charm of Guernsey, these islands have something special to offer every visitor.
