When it comes to famous football anthems, one that stands out is You’ll Never Walk Alone, closely associated with Liverpool Football Club. This song has been sung at Anfield since the early 1960s, becoming a symbol of the Reds and their passionate fans. Originally written for a musical in 1945, it was popularized by Gerry and the Pacemakers’ cover in 1963. Apart from Liverpool, Celtic, Borussia Dortmund, and Feyenoord are also known to sing this anthem.
Recently, on a trip to Japan, I discovered that FC Tokyo fans sing You’ll Never Walk Alone before every game. Despite the language barrier, fans are able to sing along as the lyrics are displayed on big screens. Attending a J League 1 match between FC Tokyo and Shonan Bellmare, I witnessed the powerful rendition of the song by Japanese fans. The atmosphere was unique, with supporters standing together, scarves in the air, singing in perfect English.
As a Liverpool supporter myself, hearing this rendition in Japan was a surreal experience. Despite the home team losing the match, the fans continued to sing and chant throughout. The dedication and passion of the Tokyo fans left a lasting impression, showcasing how football truly transcends borders. This experience highlighted the global reach of Liverpool FC and the impact of a simple song that originated in the UK but has now found a place in the hearts of football fans worldwide.
