More than 100 people lined up as early as 2:30 am just to secure a spot at an NHS dentist in Warrington. People brought camp chairs to sit on as they waited outside MyDentist in Westbrook for hours.

The dental practice announced that it would be accepting 20 NHS registrations once a month on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure a spot, individuals had to physically go to the practice on the registration day.

Residents were informed that the practice opens at 9 am, but patients typically arrive much earlier to register, with queues forming as early as 6 am. Once the first 20 patients were registered, the practice could not accept any more until the following month.

On the registration day, one resident arrived at 7:45 am only to find out that people had been queuing since 2:30 am. By 7:30 am, there were already over 100 people waiting in line, despite the practice’s capacity to take on only 20 new patients.

The situation raised concerns among residents, especially with elderly individuals having to wait in line for hours. The practice, MyDentist, initially believed that the first-come, first-served system was the fairest way to handle the high demand. However, they are now considering implementing a waiting list to manage the process better.

A spokesperson for MyDentist acknowledged the unprecedented demand for NHS dental appointments and assured that the practice is working to support more patients despite the shortage of NHS dentists nationwide. They are exploring options to improve access to dental care and will keep patients informed about any changes.

NHS Cheshire and Merseyside also recognized the challenges in accessing dental services in Warrington and across the country. They are collaborating with dental practices to enhance the provision of NHS dental services in the region. Urgent dental care is available seven days a week, and individuals in need of immediate assistance can contact the Cheshire and Merseyside dental helpline.

The overwhelming response to the NHS dental registration in Warrington highlights the ongoing issues with dental care accessibility. The efforts to address these challenges by introducing a waiting list show a commitment to providing quality care to the community. Residents are encouraged to seek urgent dental care when needed and stay informed about updates from NHS dental services in the area.
