The management team of Runcorn Shopping City has responded to calls for the complex to be closed down by a frustrated resident who believes it should either be renovated or demolished completely. The resident, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed their disappointment in the decline of the shopping center, which they claim was once a trendsetter across Europe.
One of the issues raised by the resident was the locked public changing facilities, especially inconvenient for parents with infants. However, Gill Sarath, the center coordinator, explained that the facilities had to be locked due to high levels of anti-social behavior and damage, ensuring they remain in a usable condition for genuine users. The cleaning and security team have access to unlock the facilities when needed.
Another concern was raised regarding the cleanliness of the soft play area after a child reportedly contracted hand, foot, and mouth disease. Ms. Sarath clarified that the area is regularly cleaned and treated with a product called Zoono to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. The cleaning team monitors the area daily for cleanliness and safety.
Despite these challenges, Runcorn Shopping City’s management team is actively working to enhance the shopping experience for customers through ongoing upgrades and free events for families. The footfall at the shopping center has increased year-on-year, with an average of 53,000 visitors each week. While facing competition from online shopping and out-of-town retail parks, the center remains committed to providing a vibrant and welcoming space for the community.
Efforts are being made to attract new tenants that cater to the community’s needs and preferences. The management team is dedicated to maintaining Runcorn Shopping City as a hub for local residents and shoppers, ensuring it remains a valuable asset in the community.
